Recovering From Midlife Divorce – Step 7 Magic

Jun 18

This is part of a series.

When recovering from your midlife divorce you should eventually come to a place of acceptance. You were married once. There were good times and there were bad times. Somehow you two lost the plot and it’s over. What’s next?

Step outside your comfort zone

Step outside your comfort zone

I believe this is the time to totally step out of your comfort zone. Do something big and scary. What is that one thing that you’ve always wanted to do, but you’ve been afraid? Go for it! Your “big and scary” may be something like singing… in front of actual people. Or it might be huge like moving to a new city or changing careers. If your thing is big to you, it’s big enough.

Today I’m issuing a challenge…to myself and to other people who find themselves in the place of starting over when you didn’t think you’d be HERE ever again. Figure out what yanks your chain, what would make you feel the magic again and go out there and do it!

So, now you’re rolling your eyes at me again. You’re saying, “But, Eliiiiizabeeeth, what about you? Are you going to do it? What’s your big and scary thing?”

Here’s what I’ve done so far. I always wanted to act, so I auditioned for a play. I got a tiny little part and had fun, so I auditioned for another. That time I got a bigger part and had even more fun, so I went to another audition. I haven’t heard back and I assume I didn’t get the part because it’s been a week. {Update: finally got a call. Didn’t get it.} Oh, well. I’m not going to stop auditioning because that’s what you have to do to get to play. And for me, acting is playing. It’s magic.

The other thing I’ve done is start this blog. In the past I’ve had a couple of other blogs, but those were more like online diaries that were mostly for me. This time, I’m letting go of my privacy and putting myself and my life out here in public. I’m sharing it with friends, acquaintances, and strangers. Even though it feels like I’m baring my soul.

It’s terrifying, but it makes magic.

I’m also helping my daughter start up a business. I’ll tell you more about that later. We’re still doing the behind-the-scenes work to make it happen.

What’s your thing? What will cause the magic to happen for you? Will you join me? Tell me about it in the comments.

  1. You are spot on. Stepping out and making that first step will change your life. I acted on a dare from a group of friends two summers ago. I can’t begin to tell you how many doors it opened for me. That one little step was truly the beginning of an entirely new me!

  2. Elizabeth, I applaud your life do over for your sake but also because every day you’re setting a great example for someone, somewhere else. Brave girl.

  3. “Figure out what makes the magic and go out there and do it!” This is sage advice for anyone, at any time!

I <3 this! I am trying to do this. But being a single mom of 6 kids, 17-7 plus working full time.. my season will come later. I can not wait to hike more! Recently I bought myself a nice camera to play at photography. Little things in this season, watch out in the next season.
