Auditions

Aug 26

I’ve been encouraging you to step outside your comfort zone because that’s where the magic happens.

And… I’ve been taking my own advice. My latest venture into stepping outside my comfort zone is going to auditions for a local community theatre production of Wizard of Oz.

I hope to be the Wicked Witch of the West. Do you think green skin works for me?

Would I make a good witch?

Would I make a good witch?

For this audition, I had to memorize a 1-minute monologue. I chose a piece from Sleeping Beauty. I found a script online and did a bit of the story introduction as the narrator and then switched to Maleficent and put the curse on Aurora.

It was fun. Auditions are scary, but my monologue was great fun.

Interestingly, I just now learned that a Disney movie titled Maleficent will be coming out next year. It will be the story of Sleeping Beauty as told from the perspective of the evil fairy.

Callbacks for Wizard of Oz were today. I didn’t get asked to go to callbacks. Of course, the last time I was in a play, I wasn’t asked to callbacks. Sometimes your audition goes so well that the director is certain he wants you based on what he sees at the initial audition.

I also auditioned for another play a couple of months ago. It’s being put on by a local university and callbacks were tonight since classes are just now back in session.

I don’t know if I will be cast in either play, but I put myself out there. I stepped outside my comfort zone.

I’ll let you know what happens.

Update: I didn’t get either part. It was obvious to my why I didn’t get the one from the local university. I was not the right age. I suspect I didn’t get cast as the Wicked Witch because the director thinks I’m not mean and scary enough. Oh, well. That’s life sometimes.
